Target Market

I.2.1

Target Market

We are focusing on the sector of Decarbonising Heating and Cooling. This involves a broad range of solutions, services, and digital technologies segmented into three key areas:

  • Conserve – Building efficiency solutions to reduce the demand for heating and cooling
  • Connect – Solutions to externalise sourcing of heating and cooling by installing pipe networks and technologies to monitor, optimise and maintain systems installed
  • Convert – A broad range of sources of heating and cooling – heat pumps, industrial waste heat, geothermal, biomass, solar, thermal storage, etc.

This also involves addressing the key processes in taking investments from vision to operations – e.g. strategic planning, stakeholder management, as well as project management, preparation and delivery

I.2.2

Growing Market

The market for solutions to decarbonise heating and cooling is growing rapidly, driven by concerns related to energy security, affordability, and climate change. To meet the political objectives there is a need to increase the delivery capacity of installation by a factor 5. At the same time, the sector will lose thousands of highly experienced staff leaving for retirement. Consequently, there is a growing shortage of staff to design, implement, operate, and maintain the required installations. Unless rapidly resolved, the sector will not be able to achieve what is required

I.2.3

Barriers to Growth

Decarbonisation of Heating and Cooling involves significant opportunities and benefits for individuals, local communities, countries, businesses, investors, and not least – the next generation of talents. Experiences in markets having made strong progress in reducing dependency of fossil fuels for heating and cooling are encouraging. Stability in supply, reduction in demand, lower costs, inward investments, new jobs, reduced emissions, improved balance of trade, are some examples on wins. All in all, we are motivated by both the stick and the carrot. We better speed things up.

I.2.4

Strategic Priorities to Accelerate Investments

To speed things up we need to overcome the barriers to change. Governments are making significant efforts in trying to drive decarbonisation. Grants, subsidies, regulations, active promotion, are examples on this. However, despite these efforts, actual output remains below objectives. The key showstoppers are :

  • Capex – ROI ratio not satisfactory for investors
  • Uncertain Revenue models – hard to undercut tariffs of subsidised gas
  • Risks – political, commercial, technical

A major dilemma is that the industry is trapped in a Catch 22. Low volumes of investments drives costs which in turn keeps volumes low. To break out of this stalemate there is a need to standardise and replicate. The sector needs to take the leap from Tailor made to Industrialisation. From Savile Row to H&M. Better to be dressed good enough, than not at all.
